Creativity and Wellbeing in Later Life at Signature at Hendon Hall

At Signature at Hendon Hall, residents are empowered to pursue their passions, discover new talents, and thrive in later life within a vibrant and supportive community.

Set within the historic Grade II listed 18th-century Hendon Manor in Barnet, North-West London, Signature at Hendon Hall is an award-winning luxury care home that is home to 97 residents. The home offers an exceptional living environment where hobbies and personal interests are not only maintained but actively encouraged to flourish.

A Home That Inspires Creativity

With a wide range of amenities including a cinema, dedicated art studio, and beautifully landscaped gardens, residents have countless opportunities to stay engaged, inspired, and connected. A varied activities programme, alongside one-to-one sessions and organised trips to local art and pottery classes, ensures residents can continue lifelong interests while also exploring new creative outlets.

Gerald: A Lifelong Passion for Art

One resident, Gerald, a former mechanical and aeronautical engineer, has nurtured a passion for art since the age of 15. Today, he continues to explore his creativity through portrait painting, sculpture, pottery, and life drawing, always seeking new challenges and opportunities to learn.

Since moving to Hendon Hall, Gerald has embraced life in a welcoming community while reconnecting with his artistic pursuits. He regularly uses the art studio, where natural light and peaceful surroundings provide the ideal setting for his work. He has also become well known for his portraits of fellow residents, staff, and family members.

Zena: Creativity Without Limits

Another inspiring resident, Zena, has maintained a lifelong passion for art alongside a distinguished career as a medical doctor and health education professional. Without formal training, she developed her artistic skills through evening classes and personal exploration, building an impressive portfolio of paintings and sculptures over the years.

Today, Zena continues to create and share her work, proudly displaying pieces throughout her apartment and across the home, including in the dedicated sculpture garden. Since joining the community, she has encouraged fellow residents to explore their own creativity, helping to foster a culture of artistic expression and confidence.

Exploring New Talents Together

The home also organises group outings to local art studios, where residents can take part in pottery and ceramics classes – often trying something completely new for the first time. These experiences help residents uncover hidden talents, build confidence, and form meaningful friendships.

Mary: Finding Joy Outdoors

Mary, another resident, finds purpose and enjoyment through gardening and golf. She loves spending time outdoors and plays an active role in maintaining the home’s gardens – planting flowers, trimming plants, and socialising with others in the sunshine.

Speaking about the outdoor space, Mary said:

“We’re so lucky to have such a lovely garden here at Hendon Hall. I’ve always enjoyed spending time outdoors, and although I’m not an expert at gardening, I really enjoy it. We host lots of wonderful events in the garden and it is a really nice space for everyone to get together.”

A Commitment to Personal Fulfilment

Orla, General Manager at Signature at Hendon Hall, commented:

“It is amazing to have so many talented and creative residents here at the home. We are passionate about enabling people to live life to the full and continue enjoying the things they have always loved doing. Our team takes the time to get to know each resident – their likes, dislikes, hobbies and interests – so we can provide truly personalised, tailored care.”

One of the defining features of life at Hendon Hall is its commitment to ensuring creativity and personal fulfilment remain at the heart of daily living. Whether continuing lifelong passions or discovering entirely new interests, residents are supported to express themselves, build friendships, and embrace new opportunities.
