Cliveden Manor residents took a trip down memory lane in the Penny Arcade at the Milestones Museum in Basingstoke this week. The Arcade has many slot machines which use old pennies to make them work. It was lovely to have the feel of ‘old money’ in our hands again! Some firm favourites were: the laughing sailor, fortune teller, Wombles of Wimbledon and Pellum Puppets, all of which were enjoyed by slotting in a few old pennies.
In the Old 1940s Sweet Shop we enjoyed buying a ration of old fashioned sweets, having them weighed on the good old traditional scales we all remember, in good old fashioned pounds and ounces! The Camera and Music shop were the highlight of the trip, with a proper gramophone player where we could choose a song to play, our residents’ favourite being Vera Lynn.
