Rodney has been living at Rosebery Manor since 2015, the sign on his front door reads ‘Sod Off!’ His quick wit & cheeky sense of humour has amused many of our residents & staff. Rodney is a Professor of History & he worked at Bristol University for many years. He suffers from Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a rare condition that can cause problems with balance, movement, vision, speech & swallowing. Rodney is prone to falls, due not only to his condition, but also because he is stubborn and will not always wait for carers. On one occasion several carers rushed in response to his emergency bell to find him in hysterics, laughing, because where he had fallen, he had head-butted the wall & made a crack in it! In 2015 staff did a sponsored sky dive to raise money for PSP research, & Rodney travelled up to Oxford with us to watch, he would have done the dive himself had health & safety allowed it! Rodney did however take to the ice at Hampton Court Palace, Christmas 2015. He loved it & his enthusiasm encouraged other wheelchair users to have a go. At an activity forum Rodney suggested Jet Skiing as a new trip out, sadly we couldn’t accommodate this. We have several themed events in our community & Rodney loves getting into costume, we never quite know what to expect though, he takes it all very seriously & likes to shock! He is delighted when his grandchildren come to our events, he lights up when they arrive, it’s great they can see their grandad fooling around, visiting becomes a fun time as they never quite know what he will be up to. Rodney loves a game of Bingo, providing we’ve stocked up on the double decker chocolate bar prizes, he has a sweet tooth and is also partial to a slice of cake. On a Macmillan Coffee morning he sampled a slice of each cake on offer, totalling 12 slices, & then proceeded to have lunch! Rodney loves a dirty joke & laughs till he cries if something tickles him, it’s normally something rude! Rodney moved here from Coombe Hill, Kingston, & friends he made from there still keep in touch & we often take a trip over there or them to us, they all have a soft spot for him & they enjoy reminiscing on all the mischief they shared together. One of Rodney’s favourite past times at Coombe was pinching one of the activity assistant’s bottom, or having us crawling around on the floor, searching for lost items that were not actually lost. He is a regular on our weekly shopping trips & always insists on being wheeled through the ladies lingerie section in Marks & Spencer’s. Rodney has travelled abroad several times whilst he has lived at Rosebery Manor & he takes a carer with him, finding somebody to accompany him is never a bother as he is such a delight to be around. Rodney is very open-minded & very interesting to talk to.
Despite suffering from PSP, Rodney will always attempt to live life to the full, & embraces the majority of activities on offer, particularly the ones involving chocolate, women & wine!
