Debbie Self’s Dementia Friends Session at Support Office

Tom Ball kindly invited me to join the team at Support Office for their monthly breakfast meeting at the end of April and deliver a Dementia Friends Information Session. There is at least one Dementia Friends Champion in every Signature community, and sessions are generally held in house monthly, but we thought it would be a great idea to give the Support Office Team an opportunity to take part.
21 people attended – including Aidan Roche, so it was one of my more nerve-wracking presentations! However the team made me feel very welcome, coffee and bacon sandwiches were passed around, and I didn’t have any hecklers! All of the 21 became Dementia Friends at the end of the session and it was suggested that any new team member could attend a session at one of the communities.
Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative aiming to improve society’s understanding of dementia through 5 key messages. There are now almost 2 million Dementia Friends in the UK, and my hope is that every team member in the Signature Family will become a Dementia Friend during the next 12 months or so.
