Loxley Park In the pink

19th May 2010

Last summer the residents of our Sheffield care community used their spacious greenhouse to grow bumper crops of tomatoes, peppers and aubergines, plus growing lots of bedding plants in tubs and hanging baskets to display around the communal grounds.

Now the time has come to pot  some old fashioned scented pinks. These will provide us with cut flowers for our residents to turn into floral decorations under the watchful eye of activities coordinator Janet, who just happens to be a qualified florist.

Pictured are residents of our care community in Sheffield taking a few cuttings from a couple of plants.

Residents have chosen a selection of named cultivars from a specialist nursery, and use these to build up Loxley Parks own collection of plants.

Pinks, which are members of the carnation family "Dianthus" from the Greek "dios" which means divine and "anthos" meaning flower, are fairly easy to grow and take cuttings from, and best of all they have a wonderful colour missing from so many florists' blooms.

It is Loxley Park's intention to donate a harvest of pinks to our care homes in Kent and Leicester.
